Ten years ago I walked into a Borders book store in Torrance, California, bought a magazine and a coffee, and published my very first blog post. I still remember the lady at the register asking if I was a writer as she rang up the copy of Writers magazine. It shouldn’t have been a difficult question to answer. I was, after all, there to start my blog that was going to make me a very successful author. But I was also a business major and wasn’t sure how I ended up there. Life, I guess.
As I stood there thinking about how everything had turned out, the cashier looked around awkwardly, waiting for me to answer the question or just pay the bill.
I paid her and gave a shrug, saying “Well, I try.”
A decade later, I think it’s time to do more than shrug. It’s time to give a resounding “YES!” to my passions and dreams. Coffee Shop Blogging is where it all began and it is ripe with anguished stories and lamenting the losses and struggles of my 20’s. But it’s time, my friends, to pack it up and move on.
Enter, Courageous Writing. I imagine sitting at a kitchen table with a close friend, deep into the evening, talking about life in its most raw form. Not just talking about hopes and dreams, but dealing with how to keep them in sight while the daily distractions of kids and jobs and dishes and bills seem to sink your ambition. I’m talking about the days you want to sell your kids and yell at your boss and throw all of the dirty laundry in the trash.
You don’t get where you want to go without being real about the difficulties in getting there. Say it out loud. (Or in my case, write it down.) Just get it out, let it go, lighten your load a little. I’m exploring a lot of things that are slowly changing the shape of my life, like how to balance work and personal goals, how to stay grounded when I’m anxious or depressed, and what self-care really looks like. And this is my written exploration of life, where I share all those things with you as they unfold. It’s scary, truly, to just put it all out there.
What are you doing that requires courage? This post and this new blog is my courageous step today. I hope my stories and adventures give you something to relate to, maybe a little light to cling to. Let’s be courageous, my friends.
